BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Nick Veasey quite literally shows us what’s beneath the surface. The British artist is a luminary in the field of artistic x-ray photography. While other artists work in studios, Nick Veasey runs a laboratory in the English county of Kent, where he produces his extraordinary pictures taking the strictest safety precautions. His goal is to reveal what is on the inside, whether technical or organic in nature. In a society of visual superficiality, beauty is too often determined by appearance alone. Veasey seeks to give us a deeper perspective, laying bare the mechanics and materials behind what surrounds us every day. His large-format projects, such as the x-ray scan of a Boeing 777, have brought him widespread attention. Throughout the course of his career, he has x-rayed somewhere in the vicinity of over 4,000 objects including plants, clothes, records, and cars.

The use of x-ray technology outside the field of medicine – for security or observation – is a conscious and deliberate theme in Veasey’s works, and he approaches it with a subversive, satirical edge. The images in his Bags series reveal spicy secrets from the private lives of the titular accessories’ imaginary owners. The unique x-ray aesthetic sets delicate details and internal structures apart from their surroundings and never ceases to amaze us. Veasey opens our eyes to what lies beneath, allowing us to experience another level of perception.
